I ordered this music by The Blow because the band had their car die on them and were facing an upcoming tour without wheels. They posted on Twitter for help. I’ve been in that spot more than once (still sorta am) and so I bought a CD as way to chip in and help. Honestly, I knew of them only from a couple tracks played on CHIRP Radio out of Chicago. When this festive package arrived, I was anxious to check it out. And before I forget to mention, they got a car and I got a drawing of it in the package.
The group, Melissa Dyne and Khaela Maricich, based out of Brooklyn, is a synthesizer based duo who put you in a surrealistic mood with their music. I found the sound interesting. The vocals and their beat remind me of Suzanne Vega. Yet, those same vocals, and the storytelling involved, especially on a track like Think About Me, echoes Laurie Anderson in style and sound. Its an interesting mix.
Brand New Abyss is a delight starting with their cover of The Eagles, Peaceful Easy Feeling, to my favorite track on this CD, Summer. I hope to check out more of their work in the future, though I did have one gripe.
This is a writer thing but when the music started, I went to look at the cover because I wanted to see which songs were theirs and which ones were covers. However, the credits on the inside of the package says all songs are written by the duo, to which I beg to differ. But I’m not sure this was intentional as the way its worded, its the sorta thing you copy/paste when you are doing it yourself and solely focused on protecting your own stuff. I like seeing writers get their proper credit is all.
The Blow is a delightful group and I really hope to check out one of their shows in the future, provided I can find a way to get half-way into the vicinity where they are playing. This CD gets 5 of 5 on my rating scale.
