Mark Travis' Book
Mark Travis is known as 'The Director's Director'. He is a director's coach so to speak. This past year I was gifted his book, Directing Feature Films by a friend of mine who has used Travis as a coach in the past.
I found the book insightful and valuable to me. Particularly, it offered a glimpse of how all the different players - from the writer to the casting director - should approach a project. It views it all through the lens of the director and how each person contributes to that director's success or failure.
As a writer I found this useful. I think the book offered a glimpse of the nuts and bolts of a movie and why certain decisions are reached during production. I have no doubt that this helps me determine my expectations for what is put on a page and how others may approach a script.
This book is industry oriented. If you are in the biz so to speak, you will find it useful. If you aren't, there's no need for you to pick it up. I give it a 4 of 5 on the rating scale.
