That Night Nixon Met Protesters
The Women's March, which started with a retiree making a Facebook post after the election, turned out to be the largest protest in the history of the USA and clearly the effort to topple the illegitimate Russia-backed Trump regime is underway. All this protesting though made me recall a rather remarkable incident involving Nixon and anti-war protesters who had camped out in D.C.
In the middle of the night, Nixon decided on his own to sneak out of the White House. He and only a couple people went over to the Lincoln Memorial where hundreds of protesters were camped out. The protests yesterday didn't produce a single arrest but in Nixon's day, they were often violent and the thought of a President just wandering out on his own to mingle with them was pretty startling. But that is what Nixon did.
If you ever get the chance, watch the footage. It is out there somewhere. I've seen large clips of it. Nixon showing up on his own. The protesters in total shock. And then a funny thing happened. Nixon and the protesters engaged in conversation. For quite a while, Nixon debated with them, joked, tried to reason. He also did one other thing - he listened. Now neither side changed the others mind but it was a moment of courage by Nixon and really - for as crooked as he was - an acknowledgement that this is what democracy means.
Yesterday, and even today as I was talking to a friend, I kept thinking of how Trump would never possess that courage. He shields himself from the truth, lies to cover his tracks, and denigrates anyone who opposes him. He lacks a shred of the limited integrity that Nixon displayed.
I tried to find the full footage on Youtube but couldn't but here is a LINK to a short clip from PBS on it. If you do stumble across the footage, watch it for it is quite a remarkable moment in history. And remember, events already show, Trump has no respect for Democracy or other people. Until he is replaced, the streets are going to be filled with a lot of pink hats.
