Stand With Standing Rock
There is a crisis in the Dakotas which has been growing increasingly violent over the past few weeks. At the crux of the problem are corrupt oil and drilling companies who have hired thugs to use dogs, pepper spray, and threaten lethal violence against local men, women, and children who are protesting against their plans.
Native American tribes from across North America have flocked to the Dakotas and the Standing Rock Reservation to protest the laying of the great debacle of a pipeline across Tribal territory against the will of the tribes. The tribes fear the poisoning of water supplies - plenty of evidence that does happen often - and the destruction of sacred lands.
The latter is already underway. When tribal legal teams put the sacred sites in briefs to the courts, the oil/drilling companies sent out bulldozers to destroy many of them so there would be no legal argument. There is total disregard for the people in this matter.
As mentioned earlier, protesters have been beaten, had dogs unleashed upon them, pepper spray used against them by contractors hired by the oil companies. U.S. law enforcement has been backing the companies - is anyone surprised? - and arresting protestors as well.
That hasn't stopped the protests which are now numbering tens of thousands of people camped out on the Standing Rock Reservation. There is no indication that protests are letting up either. In fact, it seems the actions of the oil/drilling companies have a lit a fire under tribes across the continent and they intend to make a stand.
Many people may not remember but back in the 1970's there was a violent face-off on the Pine Ridge Reservation, at Wounded Knee, as Native Americans conducted an armed stand-off with the local and Federal governments. Standing Rock is beginning to feel a lot like that. There are a couple veterans of Wounded Knee and the A.I.M. movement at Standing Rock. They remember the sacrifice of the '70's well.
Americans may find it hard to believe that this is the way energy corporations behave. But if you travel the world, you soon discover that this is actually tampered down violence compared to what they carry-out in most parts of the world.
You may not be able to travel to Standing Rock and man the front lines. But lots of groups are supporting protesters with food, medical aid, and shelter. Donate where you can. And of course this is an election year. High time this was made an election year issue like the water in Flint should be. Apparently, politicos from both major parties, corporate execs, and the main stream media which will ignore this as long as possible, think the average person has no rights to their land, or that treaties should be honored, or that drinking water should be safe. They are more concerned with shareholders, corporate windfalls, playing the politico game, and conning people for their votes.
Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, Stand With Standing Rock!
