Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
If you have seen the fireworks, cleaned up the grill, are in need of couch potato time, then you might consider renting Whiskey Foxtrot Tango. The movie stars Tina Fey but this isn't her typical vehicle as she plays a news copywriter who is plucked from the ranks to become a war reporter in Afghanistan, simply because she is single.
This movie is based on a true story, which in Hollywood terms means there is plenty of dramatic license taken and the names have been changed to protect the producers from anyone who can afford an attorney and might sue. But if you follow the news at all, then you will find characters very familiar to you. I kept recalling events as they were portrayed in the movie and saying to myself, 'I forgot about that'.
There is comedy in this movie but it is dished out in proper proportions and the story does convey the seriousness of the issues as well as the American media circus that surrounds it, not to mention the lack of American public interest. The pace of the movie was right on mark and I found myself really enjoying this film.
If there is a weak point it probably is the first ten minutes because you really aren't sure where the movie is headed but then it settles down into a well-meaning plot. The script could be tighter but overall the movie is a surprising result. I kinda want to read the book now because I suspect the tales in it are even more of a doozy.
The movie includes in the cast Martin Freeman (Sherlock; Fargo) and Margot Robbie. There is also an important supporting role for Alfred Molina who I always enjoy watching. Overall, this was a delightful rental. I give it a 4/5 on the rating scale.
