Let us be thankful for well-written books for young children. The Underneath happens to be one. It is colorful, mysterious, and designed for rugrats in the 4th-8th grade range. As a caution, it may be a bit dark for really young kids not yet in school as it tackles the circle of life in a very non-Disney fashion.
The plot has everything. Cats who need a home. An abused hound dog. An abused kid who turns into a mean older man. Ancient Indian tribes that roam a secretive forest. Shape-shifting creatures. And a snake who's quest for revenge blinds her to love until the very end.
I read this book over the holiday and was delighted by how descriptive it was. The story is sure to ignite imaginations. A fantastical air floats from each page. It is easy to see why this was a major award-winning effort. I don't get to review many kids books on here but for those in the appropriate ages mentioned above, this one will give the kids an adventure and a half. I give it a 5 by 5 on the rating scale.
